In the last month, countries in Southern Europe were engulfed by devastating wildfires. According to scientists, the reason these wildfires were even more intense is because of continuous drought and extreme heat in the region.
July 2021 is reportedly the 3rd hottest July globally ever measured and the 2nd hottest July ever measured in Europe. This, however, is not the first time that wildfires have been caused due to extreme heat. The rising global temperatures have also caused devastating wildfires over the course of years in different parts of the world, for example, the California wildfires. While wildfires are not a new phenomenon, their frequency and intensity is felt even more so due to global warming and climate change. In the wake of this, new systems for building capacity for climate adaptation methods need to be explored and implemented. New solutions to curb climate change and global warming should also be considered.
